Lesson 1:
Non-profit organizations in Hong Kong

Class is divided into groups. Each group in turn to choose one of the charities from the list to represent.

Crossroads
Crossroads Global Distribution is a non-profit corporation that takes Hong Kong’s quality superseded goods and redistributes them to people in need, locally and internationally.  Volunteers are wanted to assist in this process.
Adventure ship
Adventure-Ship is an NGO aimed at fostering the holistic development of local youth by taking them through the challenges of life at sea. Targeted participants are those with physical or mental disabilities, behavioral challenges, the underprivileged or those with chronic illnesses.
Feeding Hong Kong
Feeding Hong Kong is the only food bank in Hong Kong dedicated to redistributing surplus food to people in need. By providing a bridge between the food industry and the hungry of Hong Kong, we provide a solution that simultaneously cuts food waste and feeds those most in need.
KELY Support Group
KELY support group provides programmes and services that focus on drug and alcohol prevention and intervention and are specially designed to tackle the root causes of abuse, including boredom, peer pressure, lack of self-awareness, low self-esteem, poverty, unemployment, and discrimination.
Heep Hong Society
Providing professional training and education to children of different abilities and their families, with the mission of helping these children develop their potential and lead a fulfilling life.
Hong Kong Society for the Deaf
The society aims to promote the well being of the hearing impaired and seeks to ensure equalization of opportunities for hearing impaired persons.
Then use the Internet to research the charity’s website .

Task 1: find out the following information.

• The name of their charity
• Who it helps and where they live
• What the charity does
• Why this matters

Task 2:
Explain to the class that their task is to convince the others that their charity’s work is the most important.

Each group should give a brief talk (1-2 minutes) to the rest of the class about their charity, what it does and why it matters.  (20 minutes)
At the end of the talks, pupils should vote for the charity they think is the most important (not including their own).

Task 3:
Hold a discussion about why people voted for the winner. What made it the most important charity?  Does the class think that the charities who came lower down in the list don’t matter, or are all these organizations important in some way to the people they help?    (10 minutes)   The groups should keep the materials on their charity, as this will be used as a basis for the next lesson’s activity on fundraising.

Lesson 2

In your respective groups, create a short 2-minute video on the non-profit organization, Masarang. Your video should address the following 6 universal questions:

Who
What
When
Why
Where
How
This will be presented on Thursday at the end of the double period.
